What is Cabinet Glazing and is it right for your Kitchen?

When considering having your kitchen cabinets painted there are a lot of options. Deciding on the type of finish that you want is one of them and knowing what is available is important. When we ask homeowners if they would like cabinet glazing we usually get a confused look or response. So, we created this helpful explanation to clear the air for all of you.

Glazing Cabinets, what is it?

Glazing your cabinets is a method of antiquing them for a traditional look. By rubbing the glaze solution on the cabinets and rubbing the excess glaze off you will get a translucent layer over the painted base layer.

There are Two Cabinet Glazing Options

Notice the shading color over the entire cabinet door and drawer covers in this photo. Here we applied the glaze to the entire surface and wiped back the excess to give it that shading effect. This creates a unique style of your very own.

A pinstripe glaze can accentuate the details of the cabinets. This is typically done with a darker color and is added to the groves of the cabinets. You can add as many lines as there are groves on your cabinets to really make the details pop out.

To Glaze Or Not To Glaze? That Is The Question.

Be sure to pick a color that blends in with the other components of your kitchen or you’ll risk having it not looking good. Think about the floors, appliances and the underlying cabinet color.

If you are looking to give your cabinets a modern look then we don’t suggest adding a glaze of any kind. However, if you’re going for the more traditional look then glazing your cabinets is a great option.
